I don't know if it was their excellent command of the English language that convinced me of their merit or their myriad of positive reviews. One thing I was sure of was that they were the only maker of bamboo rods and blanks that I could actually afford to buy. This made my decision very simple. It wasn't long after I made my choice to buy a blank from Zhus when I received the news that I had been waiting for. I had won the auction!!
A couple weeks later there was a long pvc tube on my doorstep. I was so excited!
A long time ago I remember hearing that the folks at the Thorne Bros/Fly Angler in Blaine had a service where they would assist you in finishing your fly rod. While I was up there in December I remembered telling Bucky about the bamboo rod blank that I had just purchased from China and my plans to have them help me finish it. He listened intently to my story and when I was finished talking without hesitation he stated, "You're better off just having us do it for you.". "Fair enough", I thought so about a week or so later I dropped the blank off and dictated to Rob what I wanted the rod to look like when it was done.
During the winter the rod shop at Thorne Bros is extremely busy producing some of the best ice fishing and musky rods in the world. I knew Bambi was in good hands and I waited patiently for the call.
On Saturday I traveled to Blaine to pick Bambi up. As I handed over the fat stack of cash I wondered to myself if I had made a huge mistake. While I have heard some people rant and rave about how much they love their bamboo rods I have heard just as many complain about how soft and worthless they are compared to graphite. One thing I knew for sure was that Bambi looked absolutely beautiful with her name written on her and the multi colored rainbow thread wraps. If for some reason she didn't cast well she will surely look great on my mantle at my palatial country estate!
I was feeling somewhat ill on Saturday but when I arrived home I couldn't help but to string Bambi up with some genuine silk line that I had also purchased from Zhus's. The silk line was only 11 dollars. It doesn't get much cheaper than that.
